Child labour News-About 1.89 million (21.8%) in Ghana are engaged in child labour according to a report from the International Labour Office (ILO).
Mr. Emmanuel Kwame Mensah, National Project Officer of ILO who stood in for Giovanni Soledad, Project Director of ILO caring Gold Mining Project, said the act must totally be discouraged by exposing the culprits and making them face the law as the constitution demands.
He revealed this at the declaration of the Adansi North District as a Child Labour Free Zone at Abadwum in the Ashanti region.
He moreover commended the Child Labour free zone which he said shows a clear leadership commitment in the fight against the menace.
According to him, child labour affects the growth and health of children and also impacts them morally; consequences he says should not be risked.
He noted that, the ILO is not against engaging children in doing light work as washing cooking utensils and other minor chores at home but care should be taken not to negatively affect their health and education.
He appealed to various stakeholders especially Chiefs to partner miners in the mining areas to fight against child labour since he believes the act is rampant in such areas.
