Bryan Acheampong Foundation (BAF), a non governmental Organization, in its quest to enable school children have access to reading books to improve their reading and comprehension skills has donated assorted books valued over twenty thousand Ghana cedis to all basic schools in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region.
Presenting the books on behalf of the organization, the Director for Development, Mr Eric Nyarko, noted that BAF aims at promoting the development of literacy throughout the district.
Mr Nyarko said “the donation was aimed at meeting the needs of the increasing number of students in schools”.
He added that education is being recognised by both developed and developing countries as a basic input for the development of every society, and ‘this fact is not lost on BAF but forms the basics for its existence and will therefore continue to champion the development of education in the district.’
As part of this year’s projects the education team will organize quiz competition, rehabilitate school buildings, provide school uniforms, supply learning materials to basic schools and offer scholarships to a 1000 university students, the Director hinted.
The District Chief Executive of the area, Hon. Isaac Agypong urged the beneficiary schools to take good care of the books so that they could pass them on to future generations, adding that, books were the biggest heritage any generation could leave for the people.
“The assembly is prepared to collaborate and work with the foundation for the benefit of the people” he said.
Receiving the books on behalf of the district, representitive of District Education director, Anthony Tseh, advised all communities to give priority to education, and to regard it as a bedrock for development.
Mr Tseh noted that the donation is a welcomed relief to the Ghana Education Service, and that necessary steps would be taken to ensure they are not only presented and kept on the shelves but are utilised fully to promote literacy in the district.
Programs manager Education, Mr. Rockson Dutenya says the books will enable them develop a healthy reading culture which will improve their vocabulary, knowledge and understanding of the world and subsequently better position them for success in life.
The traditional leaders called on various communities in the district to co-operate with BAF to implement their programmes effectively.
