One of the most important reasons for transporting students from all over Ghana to Akuapem Akropong for the 49th annual congress of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), could not materialize as congress was unable to elect new executives after several days of meetings and campaigning.
From the get go, students complained of poor compliance with time; a situation rawgist.com witnessed firsthand. Participants at the congress could not have a peaceful rest as the Dormitories of the Okuapeman Senior High School was heavily bedbug infested.
The participants who spoke to rawgist.com at the congress grounds expressed grave disappointment in the NUGS executives led by president Prosper Dzitse when elections had not commenced as at 7PM Sunday. Delegates waited till midnight only to find out the election could not take place.
The congress from the get go had a lot of heavily armed police personnel wearing bullet proof vests and wielding all sorts of weapons.
NUGS President, Prosper Dzitse during a press conference however apologized for all the disappointments and explained that there was no deliberate ploy to make NUGS congress participants sleep in bedbug infested rooms but the discovery of bedbugs at Okuapeman SHS should motivate NUGS and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the students who reside there throughout their studies.
A local NUGS President at the University of Ghana; Richmond Asare Tinkaro sums it up on his facebook wall thus; “The only thing that was a little organized during the nugs congress was the music. Prosper M. Dzitse we are disappointed in in you,….. Simply put, your organization was a joke.”
