The streets of Kpando in the Volta region were Saturday inundated with motorbikes, tricycles and cars as the motorists took a ride with their Paramount Chief; Togbui Dagadu IX.
The ride, which followed a communal labour held throughout the Akpini Traditional Area Friday, formed part of the Paramount Chief’s activities for the Christmas period.
The well-patronized ride, according to Togbui Dagadu, sought to rally motorists especially motorbike and tricycle riders and educate them about traffic regulations and road safety.
After the ride, all participants gathered in front of Togbui Dagadu’s Palace and were addressed by Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) officials of the Ghana Police Service, Elders of the area and then the Overlord of the Akpini Traditional Area; Akpinifia Dagadu IX.
The Paramount Chief also encouraged them to take advantage of the new satellite office of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) and register their vehicles as well as acquire driving and riding licenses.
The Police MTTD promised to put in more effort to reduce indiscipline on the road especially during theChristmas/New year festivities.
Many of the riders rawgist.com spoke to were excited about the programme, saying it is the first of its kind and will go a long way towards helping curb road indiscipline. They also had opportunities to ask questions and seek clarity on a wide range of issues affecting them as transporters and also about the progress of the area.
Togbui mentioned remarkable feats like the setting up of a DVLA office in the area, the success of the maiden Akpinifia Academic Excellence Awards, the siting of a University Distance Learning Centre, the upgrade of the Health Centre in the area to a polyclinic, the completion of paperwork towards the construction of a world – Class resort, Kpando’s participation in the Volta Fair 2023, installation of some chiefs and Queenmothers in a peaceful atmosphere as some of the gains made this year.
