A suspected robber has been killed while his accomplice is in custody after they attempted to snatch a rifle from on-duty police officers.
The incident which occurred on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 8pm, has triggered serious investigations.
Police sources at Kpone District an officer in charge of a Motor Bike Patrol Team called in to inform the station officer that he had spotted a group of young men suspected to be robbers in a nearby bush around the Kpone landfill site.
According to him, one was on standy-by with a motor bike waiting for his colleagues.
The patrol team then accosted one of the men who struggled with the Police during interrogation and snatched the Service Rifle of one of the team members and fired at the Police. The weapon however failed to fire. He took to his heels and a locally manufactured pistol fell from his pocket.
He was pursued to a location where he was about to board a motorbike belonging to his accomplice. Unknown to him however, his accomplice had already been arrested by the team.
He also attempted to snatch the weapon of one of the team members who tried to arrest him. There was however a struggle. The rifle went off in the process, hitting the suspect and killing him instantly.
A search of the area revealed one unspent AK47 shell on the ground.
The body has since been taken to the Police Hospital for further action. His accomplice; a known criminal, is in Police custody assisting with investigations.
