The national chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Afoko, has gone down on his knees to beg the main opposition party to unite ahead of their October 18 congress to elect a flagbearer.
Afoko, who has come under fire for allegedly championing the cause of Alan Kyeremanten – one of the flagbearer aspirants of the party stressed that a divided NPP can cost them the 2016 elections.
Speaking at the palace of the Builsa Chief in the Upper East Region, Afoko rallied the rank and file of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition to back him and his national executives to snatch power from the governing National Democratic Congress.
He said: “Please let’s interact. I need your help to do what I have started to do and along the way we can help each other.”
Political watchers argue that the growing factions within the NPP can deepen the cracks at the frontline of the largest opposition party. Afoko and his general secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, were attacked by gun and cutlass-wielding hoodlums a few weeks ago at the party headquarters to register their protest over changes in personnel.
According to the national chairman, he is working around the clock to bring all feuding parties in the party together.
“We will resolve all the feuding problems in the party. We have addressed those difficulties,” Afoko stated. “I want to assure you that we will take notice of what you have said. We are also aware of the effects on the party and its image but this is what happens in almost every transition.”
