The government has revealed severe financial challenges facing state-owned telecom firm AirtelTigo, including a $200 million debt and monthly losses of GH₵20 million.
At a media briefing on April 9, 2025, Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George criticized the previous government’s 2020 acquisition of AirtelTigo for $1, calling it reckless and unpatriotic.
He said the company was burdened with a $400 million debt at the time and lacked due diligence.
Core systems haven’t been upgraded in five years, making them obsolete. The ministry is engaging creditors to reduce the debt, with a new policy expected soon to protect jobs and restructure operations.
