President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially enacted the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024, marking a pivotal step forward for the nation’s shipping and logistics industry.
The Act, which was approved by Parliament in July and received the President’s assent on October 18, 2024, expands the Ghana Shippers’ Authority’s (GSA) regulatory powers, now covering sea, air, and land transportation.
This new legislation is intended to promote a balanced, competitive environment in Ghana’s commercial shipping sector.
On October 31, 2024, the GSA issued a statement confirming that the Act will strengthen its ability to ensure transparency in pricing, uphold service quality, and elevate Ghana’s profile as a key destination for international trade.
This legislative milestone comes as the GSA celebrates its 50th anniversary, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a fair and thriving trade environment.
Originally established as the Ghana Shippers’ Council in 1974, the organization rebranded as the Ghana Shippers’ Authority in 1998, reflecting its broadened mandate to advocate for sustainable trade practices and support the nation’s economic growth.
“The Ghana Shippers’ Authority expresses deep gratitude to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions toward this legislative milestone,” the GSA noted, emphasizing the role of collaboration in shaping the new Act.
To ensure smooth implementation, the GSA has launched a nationwide sensitization campaign, educating stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under the Act.
The Authority is also gathering feedback for a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to support the law’s operational framework.
Stakeholders are urged to participate actively in this initiative to help build a sustainable and resilient shipping ecosystem.
