A lawyer for the NDC Abraham Amaliba is urging NPP Presidential aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen to shun calls on him to step down from the race in order to support delegates’ favourite, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Calls on the former Trade minister to step down began last Sunday after Nana Addo recorded a resounding victory at the party’s Super Delegates’ conference.
The highlight of such calls came last Friday, after regional organizers led by the party’s National Organiser John Boadu, visited the three-time presidential aspirant to persuade him to abandon the race.
Some have argued, it will save the party time, money and recurrent acrimony between Nana Addo and his arch-opponent Alan Kyerematen in the four-man presidential contest slated for next month.
Debunking these claims on Joy FM’s Newsfile Saturday, the lawyer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) argued that it is “undemocratic to use those as a basis to pressurize [Alan] to step down”.
He said many fell on these same reasons in 2007 flagbearer race in which Alan after placing a marginal second to Nana Addo conceded defeat. His concession made a round-off unnecessary.
Amaliba claims that Alan’s concession in 2007 incurred “the annoyance of his supporters”.
A second concession, Amaliba believes will finish off the Alan’s political career.
This time around if he does the same thing, I can tell you, that will be the end of his political career.
“If Alan drops out of this race it will be the end of his political career,” Amaliba added.
He made reference to a group of polling station executives in Ashanti who, have come out to urge Alan to continue his fight to become 2016 flagbearer
“So Alan too has constituents he needs to satisfy,” Amaliba pointed out.
