The Chief Executive Officer of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has attributed the increase in cholera cases in the Accra Metropolis to the recent rainfall.
Accra and its environment recorded a heavy rain last week.
According to the mayor, the rains exacerbated the cholera outbreak in the metropolis.
Dr.OkoVandapuije tells LIVE NEWS Jimaima Chime as part of measures to control the spread of the disease which is essentially comes about due to unhygienic conditions; the assembly has begun prosecuting individuals selling food without the necessary permits.
Meanwhile the AMA has donated some materials to the Mamprobi Polyclinic to aid in the management of cholera patients.
The items include mattresses, blankets, buckets, and detergents.The Mamprobi Polyclinic has since the outbreak in June recorded about 800 cholera cases including ten deaths.
Speaking to LIVE NEWS the Principal Nursing Officer at the Clinic, Matilda Allotey Annan, attributed the alarming increase in cases to re-infection and stressed the need for intensified education on preventive measures.
In a related story ,The Progressive People’s Party has expressed its disappointment in government’s lackadaisical approach towards handling the cholera situation.
The country is grappling with the outbreak of the disease which has so far recorded about 10,000 cases with 92 deaths. Government in the wake of the disease has marshaled efforts towards dealing with the filth situation in the country. This saw the President, John Mahama joining a cleanup campaign in some suburbs in Accra.
However the PPP says government is not showing enough commitment to deal with the epedemic.
Addressing the media in Accra today, the National Treasurer of the Party, Felix Ograh blamed successive government for failing to deal with the root cause of the country’s sanitation and has called for pragmatic measures.
The party also proffered some solutions to the sanitation challenges and called on government to show more commitment in addressing the problems.
Meanwhile the PPP has described the President’s clean up exercise as populist.
Over the weekend President John Mahama together with other government officials in what they termed as leadership by example, joined some residents in Accra to clear filth from the streets and choked gutters.
