Former President John Agyekum Kufuor said on Sunday, he could not believe his ears when reports of the passing of Mr Paul Victor Obeng reached him.
“We will all die one day or the other…any death shocks but this particular one, really, perhaps is more shocking than normal”, said President Kufuor.
He recalled that only last week he was sharing a joke with Mr. P.V Obeng in Kumasi, hence, for his death to come so sudden was hard to accept.
Mr P.V. Obeng was declared dead at the LEKMA Hospital Saturday after a pronounced asthmatic attack.
He was the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission and a Senior Advisor to President John Mahama.
“He was a good person. Very bright, intelligent, industrious and in spite of the fact that our politics didn’t agree…we were friends”, said former president Kufuor.
Mr P.V Obeng was a Mechanical Engineer, politician and chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology council.
A consumate politician with long years of service, Mr Obeng was appointed in 2010, under President John Atta Mills administration as chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).
He was the chief consultant and Chairman of OB Associates, a public and private sector consulting firm and chairman of Ghana Agro and Food Company (GAFCO).
He served as the chairman of the Committee of Secretaries under the Provisional National Defence Council regime (PNDC) from 1982–1992.
“I want to send out my condolences to the widow, children, family and friends and also pray that the good Lord will give him a peaceful rest.
“From where I stand, I believe I can say that he was a leadership chamber within his group, his party; from the PNDC [era] into NDC. He was a very intelligent, capable leader. He contributed to our public life. That’s the legacy he left”, the former President said.
