Mr Ernest Okai, assembly man for the Asafo electoral area in the Kumasi Metropolis has called on the Ashanti Regional Police Command as well as well as the Mayor of Kumasi to help deal with the crime rate in the Asafo Electoral area.
According to him, vicinities such as the VIP lorry station as well as Asafo-market, Asafo-Zion and other adjoining communities have become hideouts for criminals.
He noted that many robberies as well as drug trafficking has been happening at the places mentioned, adding the situation calls for swift action from the Police and the KMA so as to nip the incidences in the bud.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper Tuesday morning, Mr Okai who doubles as a practicing journalist with Media General (TV3) decried the increasing rate of crime in his electoral area.
Mr Okai tearfully narrated the death of a man who was allegedly killed by some prostitutes in a hideout near the Asafo-Fish Market area.
‘’The recent growth rate of crime in Asafo has not only been unprecedented but accelerating and one that required urgent steps to stop same’’, Mr Okai disclosed.
SUGGESTIONS:
The famous assemblyman suggested daily swoops by the Police in the named electoral areas and communities.
These woops, he noted would scare criminals from continuing with their nefarious activities in the electoral area.
Mr Okai also suggested the detailing of some task force officers from the KMA and the transport unions at the Asafo Market to look out for criminals.
The Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Mr Okai said could also join in dealing with the situation since the electoral area falls within the central part of the Ashanti Region.
‘’I am appealing to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, REGSEC as well as other institutions to come to our aid because the situation is becoming irresistible and sometimes scary to say the least’’, the Asafo assembly man appealed.
ASSURANCES:
Meanwhile, the Assembly man has assured residents in the electoral area to diligently carry on the crusade for the ridding of crime in Asafo.
He noted that crime inhibits development as well as freedom of movement in societies.
This, he intimated is why he is determined to reach the Inspector General of Police (IGP) or the Presidency if the Regional Police Command as well as REGSEC fails to help deal with the current dangerous situation.
