Ashanti Minister sets up committee to audit SHS wiring

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah will in a few days time officially commission an audit committee set up to inspect electrical wiring in all Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Region.

This measure, the Minister noted is to eradicate the recurring fire outbreaks in schools across the region due to bad and hanging wirings.

Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper after touring the Konongo Odumasi Senior High School which was recently gutted by fire, Mr Osei-Mensah said the move is a collaborative act between the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

He intimated the resolve of the ARCC to ensure that everything is done to safeguard the lives and properties of students in school.

DETAILS:
The Minister reveals some schools in Ashanti have had no renovation in their facilities and dormitories for over 20years.

This, he mentions is a cause of recurring outbreaks in some of the schools where wirings as old as 20 years are seen hanging on roof-tops.

He maintains such electrical wirings should be changed as early as possible so as to prevent any fire outbreak in the future.

Mr Osei Mensah hopes this proactive stance by the GES and the ARCC will help stem the worrying tide in the Ashanti Region as they work to change all questionable and faulty wires.

RELIEF ITEMS:
Earlier, the Regional Minister accompanied by some officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) presented some mattresses, buckets, blankets and some consumables to students of the Konongo Odumase SHS.

The gesture was to aid the students recover from the loss they had suffered due to the fire that gutted their dormitory last Saturday.

The blaze razed down some portions of the boys dormitory destroying items in houses 3 and 6.

Flanked by the Regional NADMO coordinator, Kwabena Senkyire, the Regional Minister donated the items through the Ashanti Regional Education Director, Mary Owusu-Akyaw for the School.

Mrs Akyaw thanked the Regional Minister and the NADMO boss for the gesture and urged the headmaster to ensure the items were given to those affected and also for the intended purpose.
