Asogli thermal plant shuts down

asogli-thermal-plantThe Asogli Thermal Plant at Kpone near Tema has been shut down due to the unavailability of gas.

The situation has resulted in the loss of about 180 megawatts of electricity.

According to Citi News sources, the plant produced about 90 megawatts on Saturday due to low gas pressure, but it was completely shut down on Sunday in the absence of gas supply from Nigeria through the West African Gas pipeline.

Gas from Nigeria, which powers the Tema Enclave has been cut off following the shortage of the commodity in Nigeria as a result of the on-going strike by workers in the petroleum sector.

Last Thursday, oil workers in Nigeria shut down official and business activities at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Abuja.

The workers are against the transfer of the operatorship of OML 42 from Shell to Neconde Energy Ltd.

The strike, coupled with other factors, have resulted in fuel shortage in Africa’s largest economy with it’s rippling effect hitting Ghana.

Currently, Ghana’s Atuabo Gas plant is supplying an average of 70 million standard cubic feet of gas per day that is being used to power the plants in the Aboadze Enclave.
