Renewed violence has erupted in Bawku, claiming the lives of two people and leaving multiple others injured following a resurgence of the chieftaincy conflict.
The tensions, which had seemed to settle, intensified with the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since February 2023.
Abagre had initially fled after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his installation as chief in Nalerigu.
However, a recent High Court decision in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, quashed the warrant, clearing the way for his return to Bawku.
Abagre’s arrival rekindled the long-standing chieftaincy dispute, and on the night of October 26, gunfire broke out, resulting in two deaths and leaving several others injured.
The community now faces renewed fears of further violence amid the deeply rooted conflict.
