Ghana news-Breast Care International (BCI) in collaboration with the Peace and Love Hospitals last Tuesday screened about 2,500 students of the Kumasi Secondary Technical School (KSTS) for breast cancer and other related ailments.
The international NGO also conducted a blood donation exercise where students who were screened and passed fit donated blood voluntarily.
Earlier on in the day, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, CEO of BCI educated both students and staff about breast cancer and its treatment methods.
According to the surgeon, breast cancer is one of the high profile diseases that kill women in the country.
‘’It is crucial that at this stage the country realizes the threat of breast cancer and carries out deliberate measures to effectively address the spread of the preventable disease’’, Dr Addai posited.
THERAPY:
Dr Wiafe Addai urged the female students to conduct basic therapies on their breasts periodically.
This, she noted will help them to notice early signs of abnormalities when such appears in their breasts.
She asked that females put on nice brassieres and keep them clean at all times.
By this practice, the cancer surgeon said they would avoid the risks of getting breast cancer from unhygienic conditions on the breast.
‘’As ladies and students you are to learn breast self-examination (BSE) techniques where you put one hand on your head and the other on your breasts as you massage to see how smooth or otherwise the breast feels’’, Dr Wiafe educated.
RESPONSES:
Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper after the lecture, Miss Collina Owusu Boadi, a form two General Arts student expressed delight at the opportunity to listen to the lecture on the breast.
This being her second time, she noted her determination to pass the useful information to her colleagues in other schools and those in the house.
Joyce Forgo, a form two Economics student noted the timely nature of the lecture by the BCI group since it was the very first time she was having the opportunity to learn about how to examine the breast.
17 year old Sarah Esenam Awuku, another form two General Arts student asked government to partner BCI in conducting such sensitization programs across the country in all second cycle institutions so that the female folk will at an early stage take good care of their breasts.
TUTOR:
Mrs Ama Nyarko Attafuah Quainoo, a tutor at KSTS thanked the BCI leader for her continuous support to the school.
She revealed that the school’s new assembly block was being constructed for them by Dr Wiafe Addai.
According to her, the surgeon has at regular intervals conducted lectures on breast cancer for the school and urged other individuals to emulate the surgeon.
