Ghana News-The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of Breast Care International (BCI), an international non-governmental organization has held its maiden meeting in Tamale to plan ahead of its annual walk slated for October this year.
The team uses these meetings to discuss strategy, routes to use during the walk, financial expenses, field visits and breast cancer screenings before the main event.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper from Tamale, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai said ‘The BCI walk for the cure’ has been an initiative to create awareness about breast cancer as well as its effects on the populace especially those who are affected by the disease.
Some people across the country, she noted have by earlier walks by BCI across regional capitals become aware of the threat of breast cancer.
BCI, the cancer surgeon mentioned uses the walk to prick the consciences of health workers as well as the public about breast cancer.
VISITS:
Visiting the Gulkpei Naa at his Palace in Tamale in the company of some breast cancer survivors, the BCI team led by Dr Wiafe Addai thanked the chiefs and people for their warm reception.
The team assured residents of plans by BCI to ensure they screen and treat people with breast related diseases before the main walk later in the year.
Welcoming the team, Alhaji Alhassan Abdullah, Gulkpei Naa of Tamale commended BCI for spearheading breast cancer awareness in the country.
He praised Dr Wiafe-Addai for leading efforts in bettering the health of people especially women, adding families over the world are best kept together when their women are healthy and strong.
REGIONAL MINISTER:
Alhaji Salifu Saeed, Regional Minister for the Northern Region has lauded the efforts of Breast Care International.
Speaking during a courtesy call on him at his office, Alhaji Saeed said but for BCI many in the country would not have become aware of breast cancer.
The efforts of BCI, he noted has also helped to sensitize the society that there is treatment for breast cancer.
He welcomed the team and urged them to feel at home as they plan towards this year’s national walk in Tamale.
