The Minority in Parliament has filed a motion asking for a Parliamentary probe into the Black Stars’ disastrous outing in Brazil, which led to their early exit from the ongoing 2014 World Cup Tournament.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the Minority Spokesperson on Youth, Sports and Culture, Isaac Asiamah, claimed the Black Stars failed world cup campaign saw massive corruption, cronyism and nepotism.
The NPP MP alleged that the extent of rot that characterized the organization of Ghana’s participation in the 2014 World Cup requires a bi-partisan Parliamentary investigation to establish the truth.
The President earlier emphasized the need for a committee to be set up to probe into the abysmal performance of the Black Stars.
Commenting on the President’s decision, Mr. Asiamah noted that “the President has no power or authority to ask the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to set up a committee of inquiry”
He stated that the Ministry of Youth and Sports should rather be held accountable for the early exit.
“The conviction of many people is that a lot of the rot emanated from the Ministry especially in the matter of their appearance fees and government’s sponsorship to supporters,” Mr Asiamah said.
According to him, “if the President wants a potent committee to delve into the issue what is required is a ministerial committee of enquiry”
Mr. Asiamah said several committees set up by government had not yielded any benefit to Ghanaians.
Supporting his claim with an example, he recalled that the probe into the Maputo Games scandal in 2011 only exposed managerial incompetence, institutionalized corruption and organizational rot at the National Sports Authority.
According to him, the “current government always hides behind the cover of committees of inquiry and squander public funds with impunity”
Meanwhile, Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has criticized President Dramani Mahama over his decision to reassign what he calls an incompetent Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, and his deputy, Joseph Yamin, to different portfolios in government instead of sacking them, from his administration.
“ Why not ask the two of them to step aside while we investigate this. Before investigations can commence, you are asking them to assume other national responsibilities. Shipping incompetence to other areas of our national endeavor. If they are toxic you want them to affect those areas with their toxicity? It’s incomprehensible”
According to him though the President recognized the Ministers’ incompetence, and inefficiency he still allowed them to negatively affect other areas including his own office.
