Chiefs have been asked to make lands available for the mass cultivation of Alfafa for export.
The call was made Thursday by the President of the National House of Chiefs and Agbogbomefia of Asogli State; Togbe Afede XIV during a meeting of the House in Kumasi.
The meeting coincided with the visit of the Ghana Beyond Aid Committee for a Stakeholder Consultation with the National House of Chiefs on the Ghana Beyond Aid Charter and Strategy Document.
Togbe Afede XIV also suggested the establishment of land banks for the cultivation of Alfafa. He believes it will enhance the incomes of members of the house and also provide a boost for the country’s agricultural earnings.
Alfalfa, also called lucerne or Medicago sativa, is a perennial flowering plant in the legume family. It is cultivated as an important forage crop in many countries around the world. It is used for grazing, hay, and silage, as well as a green manure and cover crop. Chiefs throughout the country say they lack the ability to adequately support government due to their limited power of summons.
