The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) says it is on wide alert to kick against any looming threat of a massive retrenchment of staff in the Public Sector.
The association says it is picking signals of government’s intentions to lay off government workers to curb the nations ballooning wage bill.
The First National Trustee of CLOGSAG, Kwame Asamoah– Dwomoh accuses government of incubating a plan to thin the public sector pay roll to lessen the pressures off the single spine pay policy.
“Though it hasn’t been officially stated, there are noises that the implementation of the single spine salary is causing government economic hardship and government is trying to also say that the policy document of the SSSS contains a provision for government to retrench workers,” he divulged.
Mr. Asamoah– Dwomoh argued that government’s argument that single spine salary scheme warrants downsizing public sector work force is untenable.
“We have been part of the conception and inception of the single spine policy and nowhere has it been indicated that the implementation of the single spine pay policy will also include retrenchment in the public sector. It is neither stated by the consultant for the program nor the government committee and no mention of retrenchment is even made in government’s own white paper to that effect,” he added.
He warned that his outfit has witnessed the damning effects of a similar exercise in the past and will not sit aloof and allow a recurrence.
“If you remember, there has been a retrenchment before in Ghana and that time they named it redeployment but ended up as total retrenchment. People took money, went home and died because their monies couldn’t sustain them”
Mr. Kwame Asamoah – Dwomoh emphasized that retrenching government workers will lead to a spring of uncontrollable events in the country.
He admonished government to rather focused on creating more jobs to absorb the teeming unemployed youth.
