Ghana News–District Chief Farmer for the Tano North District has lamented the bad roads leading to cocoa growing areas. He also speaks bitterly of how so-called cocoa roads are not benefiting cocoa farmers.
Charles Genfi who lives on his 200 acre cocoa farm says many governments just pay lip service to farmers. He says a lot could be achieved if fresh roads leading to cocoa farms are built. He wants government to stop dwelling on rehabilitation and begin to create new roads into the cocoa farms. “Where there are no roads, we have to carry bags of cocoa on our heads over long distances to the road side for onward transportation to the shed”, he explained and said that is expensive and tedious.
He was speaking to a group of journalists dedicated to promoting Agriculture and Rural Development; GARDJA, who had visited him and other farmers on his farm to find out their challenges.
He also accused government officials of being out of touch with farmers. “They just sit in their offices in Accra and do whatever they think is fine”, he fumed.
