A social worker, family therapist and counselor is asking the country not to diffuse its religious and cultural identity as Ghana joins the United Nations council on human rights. Ghana was over the week elected to join 46 countries on the UN human rights council to champion issues of human rights around the world.
The UNHRC addresses thematic human rights issues such as freedom of association and assembly, freedom of expression, freedom of religion and women’s rights.
However one mandate that has raised some concerns is the council’s mandate to promote and protect Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexual and Transgender rights.
Speaking on this, Dr George Manu emphasized that Ghana must refrain from a wholesale adoption of all conventions of the council it is currently partner to.
He stresses that the cultural and social identity and positions of sovereign states on issues of homosexuality needs to be projected on the international scene.
