C/R NDC records 148,000 members

NDCCentral regional secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded 148,000 members in a mop-up registration exercise which begun in August 16 this year to allow every card bearing member of the party to exercise his or her franchise in the November 7 presidential and parliamentary primaries.

This represents more than thrice the total number of members of 44,000 the party had in the run-up to the 2012 General Elections in the region.

The region was also the first to finish with the entry of the data and production of the voters register in the country.

This was disclosed by the Central Regional Elections Director of the NDC, Mr. Yaw Asiedu, in an interview with the media in Cape Coast recently.

According to him, Mfantseman Constituency has the highest number of members in the region with over 12,000 members followed by Cape Coast North with close to 10,000 members.

The regional elections director revealed that the party exceeded its target of the total number of members, saying the NDC started the exercise in 2014 but people did not show interest until it was announced that every member of the party would be allowed to vote in the primaries.

“This is a positive sign for the party since it shows how keen people are to be part of decision making in the party,” he stated.

He hinted that the register would be displayed for six days for branch executives to go through and delete names which are not supposed to be there in order to help the party have the actual and accurate number of NDC members in the region.

Mr. Asiedu stated that the production of the register had successfully ended and those still registering people were only wasting their time.

He assured that the party will conduct free and fair primaries adding, “we want to be pacesetters so nobody can infiltrate our system.”

He charged executives to desist from campaigning for aspirants, adding that executives who wish to do that should resign as stipulated in the party’s guidelines to prevent chaos.
