Blood donated to stock and sustain the Blood Bank at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is never sold out to the general public; that is a strong exception officials at the unit are taking against individual assertions being peddled around.
The Unit is distancing itself from the misconception the general public has against it.
According to officials at the unit, it would be wrong for them to sell out blood donated by volunteers and other individuals at a time when blood is needed to save lives.
The KATH Blood Bank issues about 50 to 60 units of blood daily to needy patients.
Blood donor Organizer at KATH, Arhin Benjamin made these remarks at a blood donation exercise organized by telecom operator MTN at the Katanga hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
MTN is targeting 700 pints of blood from donation centers across the country to help fill the blood banks of the Korle-Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals.
He is therefore encouraging all well-meaning Ghanaians to donate blood to sustain the hospital’s blood bank.
Mr Benjamin said, blood is an essential product and the unit is working hard to ensure blood was available for needy patients all the time.
“People complain that after collecting the blood, we sell it at the blood bank no we don’t sell the blood,” he stressed.
He further said, the only fee being charged at the unit is the processing fee before the blood is issued to patients.
The Katanga hall President, Albert Elikem Fia urged other halls at the University to also organize similar exercises to contribute their quota to societal development.
