Ghana Education News-A Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says the government is ready to go ahead with the double-track system it has proposed to implement in September.
The system, he noted will allow the over 400,000 students who have qualified to enter senior high school do so in a rotational semester manner.
Speaking on News-file, a current affairs program on Joy Fm in Accra the Deputy Minister said the government has taken time to brainstorm on this process with all the necessary stakeholders and is sure to implement it to a full success.
Dr Adutwum said about 19, 000 more teachers will be recruited to help provide quality tuition for the students who will be on the two rotational semesters from September this year.
‘’We are ready to roll out the double track system this September and we are positive about the success of the project since all that needs to be done to get students quality education is involved in the system’’, the Deputy Minister stressed.
CONSULTATION:
The Deputy Minister revealed that his outfit has had enough consultation with Senior High School headmasters on the new system.
According to him, the data the ministry is currently using to implement the policy was collated and forwarded by these headmasters.
The document, he disclosed gives a break down on student numbers each school had during last year’s implementation of the free SHS policy.
Dr Adutwum conceded the communication about the policy seems scanty but said more consultation and education are being carried out to ensure all stakeholders are on the same page before the start of the process.
‘’We have briefed all headmasters and we are still having series of fine tuning meetings with all stakeholders so that when we begin the roll out in September all we be abreast with the system.
DURATION:
Speaking about the duration, Dr Adutwum mentioned the new system will be carried out between a 5 and a 7 year period.
By 5 to 7 years the double track system would be relaxed to the normal way since by that time infrastructure would not be a problem, Dr Adutwum stated.
Currently, the Deputy Minister said there are less spaces to absorb the over 400, 000 students who have qualified to enter senior high school.
‘’We believe by 5 or 7 years time we would have had massive infrastructural spaces to take on the numbers that will be starting school on free SHS from form 1 to form 3’’, Dr Adutwum noted.
