The Ashanti regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has embarked on massive disconnection exercise of illegal connectors and customers who failed to pay their bills in the Ashanti region.
Mr. Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, Ashanti regional Public Relations Manager, explained that, the company has declared the months of September and October as revenue collection or mobilization months to ensure that any customer who owes the company pays or gets disconnected from the national grid.
He said anyone who would be arrested for illegal connection or refusing to pay his/her bills will pay a penalty and get prosecuted, and for that matter entreated every customer of the company to do what is expected of them by paying their bills appropriately.
According to him, a large chunk of customers owe the company but are refusing to pay. He says it is unsustainable to continue providing power without commensurate revenue.
He stated that the ECG buys the power from their suppliers and only distributes same to customers.
He disclosed that his outfit will be moving from house to house in the months of September and October to check meters and ensure those into illegal connection and those accumulating bills are denied power and charged.
He hints the ECG will also use the opportunity to capture those using Self Help Electrification Project meters, do mapping and survey to ensure that all meters with customers are captured in their database.
