The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has questioned government’s decision to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Workers of ECG have embarked on an industrial action to protest against the sale of the company.
Speaking on peace FM Morning Show, “Kokrokoo” with Kwame Sefa Kayi, the regional Secretary of the NPP says those spearheading the ECG Privatization do not have the interest of the country at heart. “Who represents our interest? If the director of ECG is part of the board and was aware of the arrangement from the beginning, then he is doing the entire ECG workers and nation a great disservice.”
Sam Payne says although the NPP has not stated its position on the privatization of ECG, he believes Nana Addo will implement good policies on Energy.
Responding to a listener on the sale of Ghana Airways and Ghana Telecom under the NPP, he indicated that some institutions such as ECG are sensitive and should not be sold. “There are some institutions that if you sell, they are not that sensitive but others such as ECG are very sensitive and should not be sold. Ghana Telecom for instance was not sold fully in the initial stages.”
The Public Utilty Workers Union (PUWU) and the ministry of power are set for a crunch meeting on September 7 on concerns regarding the planned concession agreement for ECG
