The NDC presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to tackle the pressing developmental challenges facing the people of Savelugu in the Northern Region if he wins the upcoming elections.
During a visit to the Yoo Naa’s Palace as part of his third day of campaigning in the Northern Region, John Mahama assured the people of Savelugu that he would address issues such as water scarcity, poor road networks, and other infrastructural deficits in the area.
He also promised to elevate the Pong Tamale Veterinary College by affiliating it with the University for Development Studies (UDS), a move aimed at improving the institution’s status and expanding educational opportunities. According to the former president, his administration would work to improve the lives of the people of Savelugu, pledging better governance and enhanced development across key sectors if he is re-elected on December 7.
“It is my hope that the people of Ghana would vote the NDC back to continue the good works that we were doing. I know that there are a lot of issues and challenges facing the people of Savelugu. Water problems continue to be a major issue facing the people of Savelugu. Apart from that, the road network, the market, the Pong Tamale Veterinary College and many other issues and challenges that the NDC is going to come and fix.
“We will fix the water problem. We are thinking of attaching the Pong Tamale Veterinary College to the University of Development Studies. So that we can upgrade the facility and expand the number of students who come to train there. Aside from that, we want to absorb the Savelugu vocational school and upgrade the facility so that our young ones can go and learn vocational skills and acquire certificates from that,” he stated.
In his remarks, the Yaa Naa, Abdullai Yakubu Andani, expressed concern over the current state of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He pointed out that the prolonged periods students spend at home, coupled with their shortened school terms, have become a burden for parents.
He urged Mr. Mahama to reform the Free SHS system to ensure students have more contact hours in school, thereby improving the quality of education. The Yaa Naa also called for improvements in healthcare, water supply, and road infrastructure to alleviate the hardships experienced by the people of Savelugu.
“On the issue of schools, we as parents are not satisfied with how things are going. When the children go to school, they stay in school for just a month and come home for three months and I think that they should rather last about 3 months in school and just a month at home. When they stay long at home, the burden is usually too much on the parents. So we want to appeal to H.E. John Dramani Mahama that when he is elected president, he should review the FSHS for us.”
