Political Scientist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology,Dr.Edward Brenya has noted that the various social media can be actively employed in Ghana’s political system.
He says social media has rapidly grown in importance as a forum for political activism in its different forms.
Social media platforms provide new ways to stimulate citizen engagement in political life, where elections and electoral campaigns have a central role.
He further noted; “personal communication via social media brings politicians and parties closer to their potential voters”, adding that it allows politicians to communicate faster and reach citizens in a more targeted manner and vice versa without the intermediate role of the mass media.
Dr. Brenya however noted that reactions, feedback, conversations and debates are generated online as well as support and participation for offline events.
Messages posted to personal networks are multiplied when shared, which allows new audience to be reached both literates and illiterates.
He was speaking to Sir Richmond Antwi Boasiako on the Royal yeresuadee morning show.
