The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to the public to refrain from packaging and distributing “Galamsey Water” across the country.
This warning comes in response to reports of individuals selling sachet water labeled as galamsey water, purportedly to raise awareness about the growing concerns surrounding illegal mining activities.
In a press statement released on Monday, October 21, the FDA expressed serious concerns regarding this trend and announced that it would take action against anyone found violating this directive.
The FDA emphasized that such practices are a blatant violation of the permits granted to registered water-producing companies.
They highlighted that these actions jeopardize public health and safety, posing significant health risks to the population.
“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) expresses its deep concern regarding the packaging of a product in sachet labelled as “galamsey water” linked to illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey” in the country.
“The FDA warns that the packaging of unwholesome water not only undermines public health and safety but also poses significant health risks to the population. It is essential to note that a manufacturing facility licensed to produce sachet water cannot legally use its facility to produce any other products. Doing so violates the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and poses a risk to consumer safety.
The FDA is actively collaborating with security agencies to identify and apprehend those involved in these illegal activities.”
