Traders at the Kumasi central market continue to count their losses days after another fire razed down more than twenty structures in the market.
The incident left about 36 traders at the Bolahu section of the market stranded as they are still counting their loses after their property worth thousands of Ghana cedis have been burnt into ashes.
The incident which started at about 12 am on Saturday took the intervention of fire officers from the Manhyia division of the Ghana National Fire Service to quench the fire.
Although the cause of the fire is not immediately known, the affected traders were still trying to salvage what was left when this reporter visited the scene.
The Kumasi Central Market has experienced a number of fire outbreaks last year leading to the lost of properties and capital.
Plans are underway to redevelop the market to ease congestion and also end the recurrence of fire outbreaks.
Seven container stores stocked with clothes, wrist watches, sandals and other items in this latest incident.
Vegetable and Palm oil also spilled on the ground from the gallons they were contained in.
Foodstuffs including plantain and detergents were also burnt into ashes.
According to the traders, the incident happened after they had closed from the market and went to their various homes.
They said, eyewitnesses called to inform them about the incident and when they arrived at the scene, the fire fighters had succeeded in extinguishing the blaze.
“It was about 12 midnight when I had a phone call that there is a fire outbreak here and before I could get to the place the damage was done. As at now the incident has happened already and we are trying to evacuate the debris and plan of what to do next,” a trader explained.
The Fire officers say they have begun investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak.
The officers blamed the late information they had for the fire extending to most of the shops at the scene.
