Prison officers say they fear for their lives after fire gutted a prison administrator’s residence destroying personal belongings.
Some of the officers claimed to have received threats of death before the fire incident yesterday.
The cause of fire is yet to be established but Regional Prisons Commander, Deputy Director William Ofori Anoff told Luv News he has reported the threats of death to the police.
Luv Fm’s Erastus Asare Donkor reported that the razed building share a wall with the prison.
Samuel Asare the Senior Administrator at the Kumasi Central Prisons was at work but his wife was at home preparing to sleep when the fire started.
The fire started around 8:00 pm, the wife confirmed, saying she switched off every electrical appliance before going to bed.
She shouted for help when she saw smoke coming out from the room and then shouted for help.
Several items were burnt in the living room and the adjoining rooms were destroyed.
Even though the cause of the fire is yet to be established, officers believe it is linked to the fire and subsequent uprising at the Kumasi prisons a day before which led to the death of one inmate and injuries to scores of jailers.
Regional Prisons Commander Deputy Director William Kofi Anoff suspects foul play but has handed the case to the security forces.
He confirmed receiving death threats adding, they have taken extra security measures to protect themselves.
