‘Free SHS Laudable But Problematic’

The leadership of Youth Empowerment Summit has called on Government to, as a matter of urgency, take a second look at the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy to ensure its success.

While commending the Government for its effort at fulfilling the campaign promise, convenor of the group, Clement Adjei Sarfo believes the politicization of socio-economic issues especially education could jeopardize the success of the programme.

He explained: “Issues like Health, Education and many sensitive areas of our economy should not be politicized. There should be a national policy which is weaned from all political interferences so that the country is not governed solely on the basis of political party’s manifesto”.

“We largely agree to the Free SHS programme in principle, but we oppose the wholesale implementation.
Even in advanced countries, governments do not pay for the full cost of tuition and feeding on wholesale basis. Aspects like free feeding for boarding and day students should be put on hold”, Mr Clement Adjei told journalists at a news conference on Tuesday, August 29,2017.

For him, it would be more appropriate to invest the heritage fund or oil money in giving quality free education for entrepreneurial, vocational and technical training students which in the long term reduce burden on government and society.
