The Ghana Education Service has denied media reports that it has increased school fees for Second cycle schools.
Deputy Director General of the GES, Stephen Adu, who disclosed this to Radio Ghana, said the school fees have been published in some daily newspapers for parents to access.
He further touched on how heads of schools should handle final year students WAEC fees and school user fees in order not to bring hardship on parents.
On the issue of pupil teachers, Mr Adu said it has been with the education system for some time now and it will be inappropriate to do away with them immediately.
He said what needs to be done is to retrain those in the classroom to become professionals.
He said a basic retraining programme is now running and so far the GES has trained more than 30,000 of them to become professionally trained teachers.
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary for the Coalition of Parents in Private Institutions, Dr Simon Gbene has expressed concern about the negative effect the immediate withdrawal of pupil teachers will have on rural poor schools which already lack the full complements of professorial teachers.
He believes the policy should be implemented in phases in order to minimise the gap that will be created in some remote schools.
Dr Gbene made the remark in reaction to a policy statement made by the Director General of the GES, Charles Aheto-Tsega.
On the increase in school fees and the directive by some heads of schools that students should pay full school fees and examinations fees for WAEC registration immediately schools re-open, Dr Gbene asked such heads to consider the plight of single parents and work out a conducive payment arrangement for settlement.
