Ghana to start issuing chip-embedded passports April 28

Ghana is set to begin issuing chip-embedded passports starting April 28, according to Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The new passports, featuring embedded microchips, represent a significant advancement in the country’s travel document system, aimed at enhancing security and aligning with global standards.

The introduction of these biometric passports is expected to modernize travel for Ghanaians, offering improved authentication features and reducing the risk of identity fraud. Ablakwa emphasized that this upgrade is part of broader efforts to digitize and improve public services, especially in the realm of international travel and identification.

These chip-based passports will contain electronic information such as personal data and biometric identifiers, which will be securely stored and readable by machines at borders. This move not only improves border control efficiency but also ensures that Ghana complies with international civil aviation regulations.

The rollout marks a major milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda and is seen as a crucial step in keeping pace with technological advancements in global mobility. Authorities believe the new system will also streamline visa application processes and foster greater trust in Ghanaian travel documents on the international stage. The first batch of the updated passports is expected to be distributed later this month.
