Government is giving away new fridges on an increased discount under the fridge rebate system.
The program was launched some two years ago to encourage the use of new and energy efficient fridges.
It is also to face out all second hand fridges and air conditioners which emit gasses harmful to the environment.
Under the scheme, some 4,000 refrigerators have been exchanged so far.
Per the new arrangement, the discount for a two-star fridge has been increased from GHC150 to GHC200.
For fridges ranging from three to five stars, the discount has been increased from GHC200 to GHC300,
Energy Minister, Emmanuel Amar Kofi Boah announced this while launching the ‘Save a watt’ campaign’.
According to the Energy Commission, a typical Ghanaian household is said to consume 3,000 kilowatts of electricity a year.
However, some 70 megawatts of electricity has been saved since consumers were encouraged to turn off their deep freezers when they can.
Mr. Boah commended importers of refrigerators for complying with the ban on used refrigerators and assured them of governments support to help them market and sell off new refrigerators.
He added that a new system is being considered to offer first time purchasers of fridges some discount to save them the temptation to buy cheaper 2nd hand fridges.
