Government has cut sod for the construction of a 1000 megawatts power production project in Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
The environmentally friendly Estuary power project, is expected to produce power from the strong sea waves which usually tend to be destructive to the coastline.
Joy News’ Benjamin Tetteh reported that a strong government delegation led by Energy Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, and Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of State in charge of Public-Private Partnership were present at the sod cutting.
According to him, the project will take six years to complete at a cost of $4 billion. However the first phase of the project will be completed by 2015 at a cost of $100 million and it will produce 14 megawatts of power.
The project is to be executed by TC Energy, a wholly owned Ghanaian company, in partnership with a Swedish company , Sea base, experts in sea wave energy.
The country is currently going through a precarious power crisis which has led to a load shedding exercise with its attendant economic challenges, especially for businesses.
Government officials believe the Estuary project will go a long way to ameliorate the crisis situation in the country.
For the residents living in communities close to the Ada shoreline, the Estuary project could not have come at a better time.
The destructive waves from the sea have drowned many homes in the recent past but the residents believe the project will go a long way to solve that problem.
The sea wave technology is said to have been produced in Sweden and is the first time such technology will be deployed in Ghana.
