The President of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe has chastised government for failing to access the second compact of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) allocated for the energy sector.
In August 2014, the Minister of Finance, Mr Seth Terkper, and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) signed the final document for the release of $497 million under the second compact of the MCA meant for the energy sector.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi FM, Franklin Cudjoe wondered why government had not commenced the process of accessing the account; a situation he claimed had caused officials of the MCC to be worried.
He said, “we were supposed to have signed off in October, but we have done nothing” saying “all we’ve done is by creating a power ministry and we’ve done nothing to unlocking the funds.”
“The whole process of trying to fill out papers and draw the money was supposed to have been done in October” adding that such processes have not been done.
“By the time we decide even if the decision is done in February, it will take another six to eight months” before the processes are completed.
“In fact the MCA people are worried that this people are they serious this is free money,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Millennium Development Authority (Ghana) board, Professor Sefa-Dedeh said a new team will be put in place to implement the second compact.
