Govt increases Continuous Professional Development allowance for teachers

Minister of Education; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

The government has announced an increase in the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance for both professional and non-professional teachers in pre-tertiary schools across the country.

Under the revised structure, the CPD allowance for professional teachers has been increased from GH¢1,200 to GH¢2,400 annually.

Non-professional teachers will now receive GH¢1,200, up from the previous amount of GH¢800. The Ministry confirmed that payments for these new allowances have already been made to the eligible teachers.

In a statement on Monday, September 30, the Ministry of Education emphasised that the increase in the CPD allowance is part of the government’s broader efforts to support teachers in acquiring new skills and keeping pace with modern teaching methodologies.

“These enhancements reflect the government’s commitment to supporting teachers in pursuing professional development and skills upgrades, ensuring they are equipped with modern skills and knowledge to deliver teaching,” part of the statement read.

Background

The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance was introduced in 2020 by the government as part of efforts to enhance the professional growth of teachers and improve the quality of education.

It provides financial support to professional and non-professional teachers in pre-tertiary schools to undertake, acquire new teaching methodologies, and upgrade their skills.
