Gov’t should set up new committee on Bimbila conflict-Muslim leaders

Muslim leadersMuslim-leaders in the northern region are calling on government to set up a new committee to see to the Bimbila conflicts.

Addressing the press on a release from the leaders, Sheikh Amin Bamba said ” the protracted chieftancy conflicts that are raging on in three of the four traditional areas of the northern region; Dagbon, Bimbila and Bunplugu have had serious repurcussions on the livelihoods of the people and the northern region as a whole.”

It is rather sad that, the Nanumba royal family who are the brothers to the Dagbon royal family have not learnt lessons from the negative consequences of the Dagbon conflicts and have plunged themselves into a similar conflict which has began to sup the energies and resources of the people of Bimbila”, he lamented.

He believes the Dagbon traditional area can only resolve these conflicts with the support and encouragement of religious and political leadership of this country.

He therefore appealed to government to set up a new committee to see to the Bimbila conflicts and urged the leaders of the two royal families; Abudu and the Andani Gates to re-commit themselves to the peace processes with the view to finding a lasting solution to the dispute in the interest of people of Dagbon over whom they exercise their leadership.

“The committee of the three Eminent Chiefs should continue with the meditation process and show firmness and resoluteness in the decisions that they take in order to avoid the loss of confidence of the people in the mediation process. We urge both parties to show magnanimity and respect the decision agreed with the Eminent Chiefs in the conflict”.

He added that , the emotional attachment of the people of the traditional area to the conflict, is being exploited by individuals and groups to serve their parochial interests.

He enjoined government to take steps to enforce all relevant decisions.
