The Minority in Parliament has described the government’s decision to start processes leading to the recruitment of over 15,000 nurses and midwives as a political gimmick.
The caucus said the government as part of its campaign strategy in 2020 opened recruitment portals for the recruitment of nurses, midwives, pharmacists and other healthcare workers only to give them appointments with effective dates starting in the year after the election.
The Ministry of Health in a statement announced, that it has received clearance from the government to begin recruitment of nurses and midwives from August 2024.
Addressing journalists, the Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh advised health workers to be cautious of such last-minute tricks.
“Although this comes as welcoming news after several unanswered calls on the government to recruit qualified health care graduates into the Ghana Health Service, the minority is of the view that recruitment should be at the very least a predictable annual affair that feeds into a broad framework of a constantly delivering of quality healthcare service for Ghanaians.
“Per records available to members of parliament, the government has not opened the portal for general recruitment since 2020 and this current opening is nothing more than an electioneering strategy to deceive graduate nurses who have had to suffer in some cases four years of unemployment to reelect into power a government that if elected will wait another election cycle before opening recruitment portal into the Ghana Health Service.
