The Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana, GRASAG has lashed out at NUGS President Paa Kwesi Adu for breaching an agreement brokered between the various students’ unions and consequently the NUGS constitution.
“In our last NEC meeting, a decision was reached to spare the local SRCs the burden of the payment of capitation to the AASU emergency congress. This decision was reached with the due consideration that the various SRCs have already prepared the budgets for the academic year and therefore have a tight fiscal space to operate since the AASU emergency congress wasn’t budgeted for the academic year under review. The matter was duly considered and voted for. It is therefore surprising to GRASAG upon seeing a social media circular indicating that delegates to the AASU congress are requested to make a payment of Ghc 30 per person. ”
GRASAG, has been asking some questions through a statement it released on the matter.

GRASAG ORDERS PAA-KWESI ADU, NUGS PRESIDENT TO RESPECT THE NUGS CONSTITUTION OR FACE THEM IN COURT
……………………………………………………
National Executives of GRASAG wish to express our utmost disappointment in the conduct of the NUGS President on his decision to go contrary to the decision of NEC and the constitution of the Union.
In our last NEC meeting, a decision was reached to spare the local SRCs the burden of the payment of capitation to the AASU emergency congress.
This we consider ridiculous and a breach of the trust of Paa Kwesi Adu the NUGS President and chairman of NEC. In the same letter signed by Paa Kwesi Adu he indicated that member institutions are requested and limited to a 10 member delegation per each institution. Once again, this is a very serious contempt to the NUGS constitution which provides that delegation to congress shall be determined by a particular formular using the students population of the institutions.
It must be stated that the current AASU rep for Ghana was elected with this formular, so why would Paa Kwesi Adu design his own formular for this year’s AASU rep elections?. The questions GRASAG is curious to ask are that
(1) Does Paa Kwesi Adu respect the constitution that elected him or not?
(2) Does he have a secret interest to protect and is trying to bulldoze all of us (students) towards achieving that goal?.
GRASAG wishes to reveal that this is not the first evil plot of this current NUGS President. We want to draw your attention to a provision in the constitution which allows bloc heads to be represented at NEC in the event of their absence.
Paa Kwesi Adu has changed the constitution in his bedroom without recourse to congress the only body responsible for making amendments to the NUGS constitution and disallowing bloc heads represention to NEC.
Instead of Paa Kwesi Adu and NUGS making their voice heard on major serious issues affecting students, such as non payment of capitation to senior and junior high schools, the high skyrocketing schools fees, the sale of GSSM land, the several issues affecting teacher trainees and the many other national issues including the non-democratic behaviour of the security services in the country, Paa Kwesi Adu is busily engaging in political gerrymandering and circumventing the constitution of the union.
DECISION
- In this respect GRASAG wishes to advice Paa Kwesi Adu to be mindful of the limitation of his powers as a President and adhere strictly to the constitution of NUGS.
-
GRASAG also wants to reiterate that if the students of Ghana does not solidarize together to protect the constitution of the union its value would be worthless than the toilet paper and our generation shall be judged by posterity as evil men and women
-
GRASAG shall consider pulling out of NUGS since NUGS is a body that does not respect Its own constitution that governs it.
-
GRASAG shall also boycott the upcoming congress if these anomalies in the constitution are not corrected.
- GRASAG wishes to serve this reminder that no single individual is immune to legal actions. On that score, notice is hereby served that legal actions to give backing to the NUGS Constitution will be taken as a last resort when it has become obvious that the sovereign will of the people is being subverted by Paa Quecy Adu.
