Heavy Crackdown on Galamsey: Forestry Commission and Police Raid Six Illegal Mining Sites

In a decisive move to protect Ghana’s natural resources, the Forestry Commission, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, conducted a sweeping raid on six illegal mining sites in Samreboi, located in the Western North Region.

The operation, which began at 5 a.m. and lasted for 12 hours, led to the arrest of 26 individuals, including 16 Chinese nationals, two Koreans, and eight Ghanaians. Authorities described it as one of the most significant operations in the country’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

During the raid, the joint task force seized eight excavators, two Toyota Hilux pickups, a Toyota RAV4, and four motorbikes. Five additional excavators were reportedly abandoned at the sites due to mobility challenges.

The crackdown has drawn widespread praise across social and traditional media platforms, signaling strong public support for the government’s intensified efforts to combat illegal mining.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, commended the successful operation and reiterated the government’s unwavering stance against galamsey.

“We are relentless in this fight,” the Minister stated during a recent press conference. “We are working closely with partner institutions to clamp down and flush out illegal miners from our water bodies and forest reserves.”

The operation aligns with the Minister’s recent stern warnings against illegal mining and underscores the government’s commitment to preserving the environment for future generations.
