NPP will capture Asawase seat in 2016, says Alidu Seidu; Candidate elect for the Asawase Constituency in the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries has vowed to unseat the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the area come 2016.
Alhaji Alidu Seidu is seeking to capture the Asawase seat from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is currently occupied by Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak.
Several attempts by the NPP to obtain the seat of the NDC’s stronghold in previous elections have not been successful.
But the newly elected candidate for the NPP in the constituency believed he would wrestle power from the NDC in the 2016 general elections.
Alhaji Alidu Seidu pulled 457 out of the 782 total votes cast to beat his three contenders in Saturday’s race.
His key contender, Manaf Ibrahim who is the former Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Party pulled 249 while Sulemana Mohammed and Mustapha Abdul-Hameed pulled 7 and 28 votes respectively.
Alhaji Seidu who is a Broadcast Journalist with Kumasi-based Zuria Fm is seen by many in the constituency as a perfect match for the current MP for the area.
Alhaji Seidu who also served as the Assembly Member for the Adukrom Electoral Area, is however confident of using his influential role in the Muslim-dominated constituency to win the seat for the NPP in the 2016 elections.
It took the intervention of police officers at the polling station to get the candidate elect into his vehicle after the results for the polls were announced as the marauding youth could not hide their excitement at his victory.
According to him, there are issues in the Asawase constituency that had not been handled properly, thus the right person must be given the nod to tackle them.
He said, “I don’t see winning the Asawase seat as a big deal because we have a story to tell. I assure you that when we get to the bridge we will surely cross it”.
Both Alhaji Alidu Seidu and Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak are well-known and active in the affairs of the constituency, thus Asawase would be one constituency to look at in the 2016 elections.
