Partners of Nature Africa; a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has launched a seedling nursery project at Akanteng in the West Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region to feed the Rejuvenation of Galamsey Sites Project being undertaken by the organization.
The nursery, set up under the auspices of Nana Barima Appiah Darkwah III, Chief of Akenteng in partnership with Partners of Nature Africa, was launched at a colorful ceremony at Akanteng, under the theme: Restoring God’s Heritage.
The occasion was attended by Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Akyem; Mr. Seth Oduro, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Director for the area, the Municipal Director of the Forestry Commission, representatives from the Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana, the Minerals Commission as well as the traditional council.
Addressing the gathering, Nana Barima Appiah Darkwah, Akanteng Hene, disclosed that his partnership with PONA was motivated by a concern for the environment that has been damaged by activities of illegal miners.
He noted that, he decided to engage them to set up the nursery to help restore the environment and give back life to the earth so his people can live healthily.
Nana Appiah expressed extended an invitation to any organization that desires to partner them in the exercise.
The West Akyem Municipal Director of the Forestry Commission, Mr. Williams Agyapong Donkor, said the Commission would support the project with seedling to be planted in reclaimed areas, just as has been done for other organizations.
Mr. Amofa Fostor, the operation director of the organization, disclosed that, their aim is to ensure that, all the degraded lands are reclaimed to ensure productivity especially in the farming areas.
He said the organization decided to nurse rubber tree seedlings due to its economic potential.
