Dr Samuel Sarpong has announced his decision to back down on the interest of contesting for the upcoming Ashanti regional chairmanship position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This decision, he revealed is based upon a careful soul-searching and advice he received from his immediate family as well as some well wishers.
Speaking exclusively to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper, the former Ashanti Regional Minister said ‘the time had come to support the party from a non-executive position’.
He noted, ‘it is best to observe and give advice as a retired coach to new players or members of the Ashanti Regional NDC team’.
‘’I am sure my decision to opt out of the upcoming regional executive positions will afford me time to provide unbiased advice to those who will be elected in the eventual elections’’, Dr Sarpong posited.
SUPPORT:
Dr Sarpong, a former Managing Director of the State Housing Company (SHC) has however expressed his willingness to support anyone or persons elected to serve as regional executives for Ashanti.
He stressed the NDC delegates will undoubtedly select the best of persons who will be gunning for the positions that will be at stake.
According to him, the party will gauge carefully people they elect into office knowing very well where the party is at this stage.
‘’We have to work to elect and support people who will help us regain the grounds we may have lost in the 2016 elections’’, Dr Sarpong stressed.
RESTRUCTURING EFFORT:
The former regional minister expressed his desire to see the NDC regain its hold at areas it lost to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This, he noted will be made possible if members across the regions of the country continue to support the restructuring efforts by the NDC top hierarchy.
He noted the NDC with this resolve to reach out to its grass-root bases across the country will ultimately yield results.
The NDC, Dr Sarpong believe will bounce back a vibrant and properly oiled front to recapture political power in the upcoming 2020 general elections.
