The immediate past chairman of the United Cadres Front, Dela Korkorfio has dismissed assertions the events leading to the June forth coup d’états haves lost their relevance in today’s democratic dispensation.
Taking a swipe at detractors of the historic event, he stated “separating June forth from all we have as a country is an attempt to distort the history of the country.”
Today marks thirty five years after the infamous 1979 military uprising. It constitutes a land mark in Ghana’s history.
The uprising was the outcome of a spontaneous outburst of anger and disenchantment by junior military officers toward the then Lt. General Akuffo-led Supreme Military Council.
The SMC 2 administration was overthrown and eight senior officers including three former military Heads of State executed.
The nation went berserk in the let the blood flow house cleansing exercise as it was christened.
To many, the day only reopens scars of a bloody episode in Ghana’s history while others extol its objective of rooting out corrupt elements who were at the time, raping the nation of its development.
Dela Korkorfio who also happens to be a Member of the planning committee for this year’s commemoration told ultimate radio, the day marks the historic birth of Ghana’s democracy.
“It has a lot of impact on the democratic dispensation we are enjoying as a country today and to say that the day has lost its relevance is a total understatement. We cannot talk about democracy without talking about the events that led to the demonstration,” he contended. He said “whether the day is recognized as a national holiday or not, it is a day worth commemorating.”
Dela Korkorfio told Ultimate Radio, celebrations will be held in all regions and in several districts across the country.
He is optimistic cadres across the country as well as several Ghanaians who recognize the symbolism of June 4th will be in attendance.
He stated “don’t be surprised if you see members of the opposition joining the celebrations because, a lot of them supported the movement”.
