KATH Clocks 70…As CEO Commends Asantehene, Others For Ensuring Turnaround In Quality of Service.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Professor Dr. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, has commended efforts by the Overlore of Asanteman and many others to ensure the hospital is in a good position to offer quality service to its clients from the 12 regions it currently serves.

Addressing stakeholders of the hospital including management and staff at a performance review forum last Friday, the CEO said as KATH readies to celebrate 70 years of its existence, it was necessary to note that the investments and other logistical support the hospital has gained from the Asantehene, government and other philanthropists continue to help it to play its role as the only premier hospital in Ashanti while attending to referrals from across the country.

Touching on the theme for this year, “SEVEN DECADES OF IMPACTING LIVES THROUGH SPECIALIST CLINICAL SERVICES, TRAINING AND RESEARCH: CELEBRATING THE PAST AND REPOSITIONING FOR THE FUTURE’’, the CEO noted that it serves as a poignant reminder of the hospital’s enduring commitment to the transformation of lives through the pursuit of excellence in medical care, training and research as it celebrates its 70th anniversary.

“Given the continuous commitment of the hospital to the enhancement of specialist service outcomes, we believe that the theme for this conference is apt and will act as a fitting guiding light as we go about our operations continuous heavy investment and other interventions pursued by management with the support of the last Board, the Asantehene and other partners last year, the hospital registered impressive improvements in most areas of its operations, infrastructure and equipment base”, the CEO stated.

Achievements:
Prof Addai-Mensah said the support the management has had resulted in improved performance in most of its service outputs as compared to that of the previous year.

For example, he stated that in terms of service outputs, the data showed that Specialist O.P.D. cases stood at 278, 240, adding that this pushed the daily Specialist OPD attendance at the hospital from 1,086 in 2023 to 1117.

When combined with other OPD cases, the CEO intimated that the daily OPD attendance at the hospital rose from 1,259 in 2023 to 1,302 last year.

“This meant that we are now attending to over 1,300 patients from all over the country on daily basis with Emergency admissions also rising from 26,298 in 2023 to 27,996 in 2024 indicating a 6.5 percentage increase.

Others:
The CEO disclosed that there was a rise in Radiological services from 62,158 in 2023 to 71,527 in 2024, an increase of 15.15 per cent.

He noted that other Radiological services shot up by over 11 percent with 12,861 cases recorded in 2024 as against the 11,576 done in 2023.

Laboratory services, the CEo stated also went up from 247,903 in 2023 to 264,826 with Surgical operations increasing from 18,607 in 2023 to 19,061 in 2024 representing a modest rise of about 2.5 percent.

Others such as Physiotherapy services saw an increase from 12,599 in 2022 to 17,634 while admissions and deliveries on the other hand dropped during the period under review. Admissions in 2024 stood at 28,470 as against 30,133 recorded in 2023 which is a 5.5 percentage reduction.

Transformation:
The CEO said in the quest for further improvement in the quality of services, several millions of Ghana Cedis of Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and funding from other partners were invested in upgrading the infrastructure base of the hospital.

One of the most remarkable developments in this area, he mentioned was the total transformation of the hospital’s Dialysis Unit from a two-machine centre to that of 20 machines.

Additionally, the renovation of the old Dialysis Centre was also completed at the cost of Ghc 436,462,68, the CEO intimated.

“The year under review also witnessed the stunning transformation of Wards A 3, 4 & 5 under the first phase of the Asantehene’s Heal Komfo Anokye Project (HeKAP). Thanks to the intervention of His Majesty, the dilapidated old “Gee” blocks at the hospital are well on their way to being transformed into one of the most modern inpatient facilities in Africa, if not the world. On behalf of the hospital and its patients, I would like to thank the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei II, for his vision and intervention. We are also grateful to the CEOs of Justmoh Constructions Limited and Joshob Construction Limited, the two lead sponsors for the project, for their enormous contributions to its execution”, the CEO stated.

Other infrastructure:
Prof Addai-Mensah said civil works on the establishment of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), the renovation of Main Theatre and Physiotherapy Centre were completed last year at the cost of Ghc 834,007,70 and Ghc 1,485,559.90 and GHC 1,611,097.40 in that order.

Two new pickup trucks and a mini-bus, he mentioned were also procured at the cost of Ghc2.6m as part of measures to improve the hospital’s aged fleet of vehicles.

“Thanks to the continuous improvement in the pharmaceutical services at the hospital, another major project which took off last year was the commencement of construction works on a Ghc 43m Pharmacy Complex for the hospital. This project, which would have warehousing and compounding sections among other facilities, will serve our clients well”, the CEO intimated.
