Assembly members at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have resolved to support any nominee from the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo for the position as Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE).
Sources close to the paper hinted of plans by the over 60 NPP-aligned assembly members to rally behind government appointees to be chosen for whoever Nana Addo names as the Metro Chief-designate.
So far, out of the several names that trickled to the stables of your authoritative mouthpiece before the Christmas festivities, Nana Atta Poku Agyemang, Urban Roads Director, Sam Pyne, NPP Regional Secretary, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, out-going Member of Parliament for Bantama, Mr Osei Assibey, a former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister under the Kufuor administration and Nana Kofi Senya, a former Presiding Member of the KMA are top on the cards.
But only one of these will be named as the new Kumasi Mayor barring any last minute hitch.
Sources close to the president-elect hinted the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper that some of the nominees have already been to the Manhyia Palace to pay homage to the Asante Overlord, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II who they think can lobby for their approval.
Meanwhile, four members of the assembly has pledged their readiness to endorse the president-elect’s nominee.
These are assembly members from the Ahensan-Estate Electoral Area, Nana Yaw Wiredu, George Owusu Ansah, Apatrapa, Kwasi Ofori, Bantama and Umaru IL-Yass Djagana of the Fante-New Town Electoral area.
CONFIRMATION:
In an interview with the paper when contacted, Nana Yaw Wiredu, one of the long serving members of the assembly and the Convener for the Environmental Sub-Committee of KMA minced no words about his resolve to support any competent person the president would name as Metro Chief Executive for the KMA.
According to him, the assembly is lagging behind in terms of development due to the recent impasse of not having a substantive presiding member, adding once they have settled that matter business at the house should be allowed to go on.
On his part, Kwasi Ofori, Bantama Assembly member indicated his readiness to support any one nominated by the president-elect as Metro Chief Executive.
He stressed the readiness of himself and other NPP-aligned members to give a free-hand to any person who will be nominated to head the assembly as Chief Executive.
CO-OPERATION:
Speaking to the paper later, Richard Karikari, Tanoso Assembly member maintained the readiness of the Assembly to co-operate with the president’s nominee.
He believed having won such a massive victory in the recently held general election, the NPP administration would seek to do well and ensure they develop the metropolis to a befitting status.
This, he stressed would be the nomination of a quality material to head the KMA to ensure they carry out their development agenda for the metropolis.
Mr Umaru IL-Yass Djagana, also known as Morrison by friends and an assembly member for Fante New Town supported the move by his colleagues, insisting that the Assembly would support whoever is nominated so as to fast-track the development of Kumasi.
