The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), will today vote to confirm the president’s nominee, Mr Osei-Assibey as the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi.
This event, will offer the opportunity to the 91 elected assembly members and 44 government appointees to either confirm or reject the president’s choice for the metropolis.
Even before they converge for the official ceremony, the discussion amongst the elected assembly members can be described as positive.
Others, who have gotten the chance to speak about the nominee on radio shows have welcomed the move by the president.
Many, have pointed to the calm demeanor of the nominee as something that is welcoming enough for consensus building.
HISTORY:
Recalling the history of previous Metro Chief Executives at the KMA to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper, Nana Yaw Wiredu, a veteran Assembly man for the Ahensan Estate Electoral Area mentioned the different styles of previous Mayors.
According to him, while most of them employed consensus building as a tool for the discussion at the house, others resorted to brutish way of doing things.
Since they believed once their government was in power, the KMA legislator disclosed some of the MCE’s felt they could use force to pull their way through no matter how unpopular the project or policy was at the time.
Nana Yaw commended Dr Samuel Sarpong and Madam Patricia Appiagyei, previous MCEs for the KMA and noted their tenure was the best ever at the assembly as they employed consensus building to debates.
He, however, maintained the likes of Kojo Bonsu and Nana Akwasi Agyemang could have been same if they had employed the effective strategy of consensus building.
BACKROUND OF NOMINEE:
Mr Osei Assibey, who is 52 years of age and a married man with children, was the Deputy Ashanti Regional minister to the late Lawyer Owusu Ansah in the second term of president John Agyekum Kufuor’s.
He has shown interest in entering parliament but had to shelve that idea and concentrate on party work until his latest appointment as MCE nominee.
A known NPP elder, the KMA MCE nominee is noted for his involvement in grass-root work and youth development.
Having been a resident in the metropolis since childhood and a friend to the assembly in previous times, the nominee is expected to face little headache to his confirmation as the KMA is dominated by elements from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stock.
